Battlefleet Gothic: New Year, New Fleet

Happy New Year!

I finished this battlegroup over the Christmas holiday break and sealed them on New Year's Eve. At some point I know I want to add another paint feature to the ships, like painted running lights, but I met my goal of a Navy fleet before the year was out, so I'm happy to have them as-is for now.

The Phoenix, a Mars Class battlecruiser, amidst an Eldar raiding force.

Really great looking fleet you have there for one of the best games GW has ever produced (and, sadly, one of the last good games also...)! Man the stations, full broadsides when ready! Thats how you deal with those pesky Eldars! Go Phoenix, go;)

Very nice fleet! I find the Emperor's statue a very nice colour.

How fiddly are the strike craft to paint? I should probably pick some up but always worry that they will be a headache.

@ Trickstick: I can easily paint a complete wing of craft in a sitting, going assembly line with it. Prime black, drybrush base color, add accent color (wings), detail what you like (e.g. engine glow, canopy color) and you are done. The shape of the ships lends itself to painting fast as they don't have fiddly detail, unless you are looking at Forge World Eldar craft. Just keep it simple, use a strong contrasting color to set them off and you are good to go. Look at WW2 aircraft schemes and riff with it. They totally aren't necessary to enjoy the game but they really make the fleet look polished.

I am thinking of getting some so that I don't have to keep asking for markers. If I am mounting them on square fantasy bases, would you say that three per base is a good amount? I originally wanted to copy the markers (5 fighters, 4 assault, 3 bombers) but after looking at your pictures I think that 4 or five may crowd the base. Not to mention that I wouldn't get many bases from a set.

@Trickstick: Yes, I'm mounting them on the small GW Fantasy bases which are 2" square. This is in accordance with the BFG FAQ 2010, which seems to be a guiding document for organized BFG play these days.

The amount of attack craft that comes in the current GW BFG ordnance blister is usually 24, so I think 8 stands is good for an average fleet, with three on each stand. I think that number is a nice balance of visual appeal and number of markers you end up with for a game per blister. I know some players match the numbers of the craft on the original ordnance chits from the game but to me that is cost prohibitive. If players want old school chits then I’ll just play with them but honestly, telling the difference between 3, 4 or more red craft on a chit isn’t easy. Clearly modeled craft in different colors and shapes stand out better, even if they are all three to a base.

You could always just put one of each on a base as well and suddenly a blister supplies ordnance for an entire armada (but I think that would look weak.)

Hey ke,

There is a write up on that paint scheme here:
