Here's a shark warrior from Metal King Studio. Love the hell out of this jerk, not because of the paint job, but just like his stat line and behavior in the game, he was a handful to manage during fabrication. Here I had primed right over the poster tack I had in the shoulder sockets to dry fit the arms, and later, after he was all painted, his arms sorta melted off, when the crazy glue failed over top of the poster tack beneath. Shark jerk! Check out the Relicblade game! We have been playing this exclusively and loving it to death.

There is an awesome Kickstarter currently going for the next content and minis for this amazing game... be sure to check it out. If you are getting the new stuff to add to your Advocate and Adversary warbands or even starting out in Relicblade from go, this is a great way to pick up the rules and figs you need. You will thank me for it later! And yes, I am a backer getting their own card for the game so you better be ready for a Yeti character in Relicblade!!!

Hey peeps, I finished my starter warband of Bone and Darkness for the amazing Relicblade game. My buddy Jason at Headwound mentioned this game to me on a lark a bit ago, and before I knew it, I had a starter in the mail, sent by the formidable but kind king Sean Sutter of Metal King Studio.

If you don't know already, Sean is the author, sculptor, illustrator, admin, marketer, hype man, fishmonger... you name it and he does it all for Relicblade. This labor of love is a super fun, agile minis skirmish game that has a ton of heart and flavor for such a carbine of a ruleset. Post-game progression is managed by a fun "camp" mechanic that allows you to replace, re-arm and train your warband, as you limp back from each adventure and mourn your dead. Or undead. Or pigs. Or lizards. Or quintillion wandering monsters. Cough.

I will post an in depth review of the game and some batreps (yay!) in the near future but for now, here are some pics. Note that I converted the Dark Wanderer with bow a bit and the Bone Construct was reposed to look like it was scuttling. The rest of the models are stock.
And just like that, Photobucket, which earlier this year had destroyed Sarcophagi by removing their free photo hosting service that supported years of photo content on this blog, they changed their mind and re-hosted all my photos again. Yay! And whew!

So, with that, I have many months of models, projects and other things to post up here, to catch Sarcophagi up, so stay tuned for some projects I have been working on, including:

Building and painting stuff for Strange Aeons

Building a board and terrain for the Wizkid's Pirates game, which I only recently picked up for the first time, thanks to my brother-in-law who has about 100 packs in his house and he threw a couple my way and I got hooked. Jerk.

Painting Imperial Assault expansion packs and the entire Hoth expansion too, which is a campaign currently underway.

Robotech: Zentradi and some UEDF

Relicblade: I am in love with this game, thanks to my buddy Jason at Headwound minis literally showing it to me via text, and I responded by picking up a starter right away. I am building terrain and painting fantasy again thanks to this excellent game... can't say enough good things about it now but there will be a lot of Relicblade here coming soon

40k/Killteam: Scatter Terrain along with an odd 40k model here and there, including Ork stuff. A lot of Ork stuff. Maybe too much Ork stuff.

Hope everyone is well!

Jason from Headwound minis came by with his Nurgle forces and we played the first in the series of Planetstrike missions from Chapter Approved. We talked for a bit beforehand on how to organize games into a narrative campaign of sorts, linking them into a story that should drive both our play and building/painting while at the same time seeing us willing to improvise a few things here and there for the sake of fun play and good stories.

We kicked things off with Jason getting a points credit in the fortification spending I did, on top of my 1500 points of Valhallan garrison. In the end, I took a Firestorm Redoubt, Imperial Bunker and some freshly painted Defense Line (old Forge World pieces.) I also took a mixed list of Valhallan trooper squads with Heavy Weapons/Assault Weapons, Company and Platoon Commanders, Special Weapon Squad with Flamers, Officer of the Fleet, Master of Ordnance, Techpriest, Command squad with rocket launcher and Company Standard, Hardened Vets with Meltas and Heavy Flamer in a Valkyrie, Wyvern, a Hellhound with Inferno Cannon and 2 Lemans, both Vanquisher and stock.
Somewhere in the driving snows was the Eversor known to local officials as the Ghoul of Hammerfall.

Jason brought a dripping mixed bag of Typhus + zombies, Poxwalkers, Drone, Plague marines, Maulerfiend, Daemon Princes, Nurglings, Cultists, Plague Drones, Blight Hauler and a Nurgle Sorcerer who waited all game to show, but given the game was conceded on Turn 3, it mattered very little. We didn't take elaborate notes or take tons of pics so I'll summarize via words and images.

The opening Chaos bombardment thinned the Valhallans unlucky enough to be caught outside in the open. Vehicles on the move had their suspension rocked, crew shaken, and some minor damage as well.

The fortifications stood fast and once the bombing stopped and the icy winds cleared away the smoke, a hazy image of Typhus emerged from a seething black cloud of flies, which churned around the ancient Nurgle lord. He was close enough to the leading Vanquisher such that the accompanying plague zombies washed over the hull before the driver could skid to a halt and reverse, as the panicking gunners wracked and traversed their weapons towards the surprise threat.

Plague Marines and the Blight Hauler emerged from the ruins near the farthest defenses, and lurched at the passing tank convoy. Fire washed between the forces and the Valhallans sent everything they could from the snow-clad bunker walls, out into the shimmering gale, as Nurgle forces teleported into the fray. Sweeping lines of Icarus lascannon fire swept against the emerging Nurgle forces to little avail, even as Nurglings swarmed in through the Imperial back lines to claim objectives.

Above, the hovering Valkyrie struggled to keep station in the sheer, as it loosed lascannon and braces of frag rockets into the roiling Poxwalkers, who were suddenly in among the terrified guardsmen, who each wheeled around to receive the charge and abandoned their covering fire into no-mans land.

A violent series of airburst explosions strolled across the battlefield as the Wyvern crew mechanically fired with trained speed at a truly insane field of battle, while men fought for their souls, even as sickness started to overtake them, their weapons defiantly blunted the Nurgle advance.

The Leman convoy slewed about and broke their line of advance as they tried to shake loose the undead and blashemous which clung to hulls and reached in through viewports with sloughing, dead limbs. The Techpriest, incensed at the damage done to the Vanquisher, rushed out of the redoubt, and initiated combat repair protocols on the large battle tank. The Hellhound set the bulheads afire as Poxwalkers, zombies and newly-risen Valhallans twitched and writhed in prometheum. A mix of Orders and Strategems wielded by Captain Gloval of the Valhallan 554th created furious resistance until the calamity.

While Typhus flanked the wounded Vanquisher and slew the Techpriest in single combat, the Maulerfiend and a Daemon Prince thundered through the warzone, straight against the front ports of the redoubt, even as the quad lascannons speared them with thunderous blasts that vaporized the snow fields before them. With surprising speed, the Warp things dug and melted their way to the inner chamber of the fortification and triggered the plasma-furnaces atop the power grid. With a catastrophic chain-detonation, the redoubt exploded and unleashed scything shrapnel and concussive waves, which crushed everything in a wide area of effect (11" radius damn it!!!) Many Valhallans on the ramparts died instantly and not one Valhallan was left unwounded in the blast zone. The Imperial back had been broken.

As Typhus himself gained the Imperial deckwork, and his ranks of zombies swelled by the minute. The Valkyrie spent all ordnance onto the conflagration that was the base, helpless to stop the violent end to the ragged remains of the ordered Valhallans. The burned hulks of the Maulerfiend and Daemon Price clambered from the electric fires and burning craters as the Imperial Bunker nearby collapsed, the occupants just escaping in time to be dissolved by a looming Daemon Price astride the trenchwork, tall in the soot and snow.

Spent, the ice squall which had covered the battle with freezing sleet seemed to ebb away and be replaced with a miasma of steaming offal pools, fire, and charred Imperial equipment. Those men lucky enough to escape into the forest past the clearing soon fell where they hid, and even as they quickly stiffened in the sub-zero temps, their lungs wheezed and popped with thickening warm ichor as fever burned out their skulls, and the Warp reached for them... one by one.

I got another Bushido Best of the Web for my recent Bushido board, checkout the link. You can see I did the usual elevated legs feature so there is room for cards, books, figs under the board and it generally makes it nicer to sit and look at, even with LOS checking. I had to spend a lot of time with the trim cut outs around the water features and I definitely learned a few ways to do this better next time, when it comes to trim and finishing.
I hang out on the Bushido the Game group on Facebook, if you are looking for an active, fun scene for all things Bushido. Join us!
I talked with Odin at GCT about the board, which was really, really cool (thanks Odin!) and I used the voucher I got from him to order some 4Ground hovels for the board, which should be sweet and in shortly. I have been wanting to build a board with "teddy bear fur" for some time, so I can start by playing with the fur roofs 4Ground supplies, meant to look like hay or thatch.
I made a pig sty for Bushido. Why? Why isn't everyone, really? It is a simple piece that adds difficult terrain, breaks LOS and adds theme. Don't know why but the second I got into Bushido I said I am building a sty. My buddy John said I need to make a drunk villager in there with the pigs. I think I will.
40K: Been played 8th and really loving it, but like a lot of things, not playing it enough. Trying to cast up some custom Chimera turrets and build out two non-heavy weapon squads for some lower point/high-agility objective takers. Oh! Both are armed with Plasma Rifles, having been sent to me as a gift by my buddy Major Downer over at the Imperial Guard Message Boards. If you play Guard in 40k, go check out that community. Thanks for the figs, Major!!!
Scatter stowage/containers: My buddy Joe at Rocketship games offers 3D printed terrain and this set is particularly awesome for 40k, so I did up a set. Joe has a Kickstarter running called Kolony, you should check out. Valhallan Barracks: I added in some DUST quansets as barracks to boot, easy adds and really dress the board well. Note that I used super glue to add acetate windows, simply letting the fumes of the glue "frost" the windows. I love efficiency. You could also spray the acetate with Dullcote but this was faster and more fun just to see the random frost patterns set up.

Imperial Assault: With Legion looming in the distance it is easy to forget I have a lot of IA to paint and play with. At a family function I got into a conversation about Legion killing IA; I don't think it is going to happen, if anything, Legion may drawn in players that don't end up caring much for the scope and hobby demands of Legion games and maybe they go IA, and enjoying that much more. We'll see. I will likely want to start the IA queue for this after I see Last Jedi (got my tix already!)

This past weekend I had probably a too-huge game of 8th edition 40k with my buddy Jason at Headwound minis. He brought his immaculately converted and painted Nurgle forces upon which I would cut my teeth (ew,) as they properly ransacked my Imperial air base in a bold dawn-to-dusk raid. 1500 points and several hours later I was feeling pretty damn satisfied that my Valhallans were properly bloodied and performed to themes very well. Better, I felt like I had the hang of a game new enough to me that I bother to say it with feeling.

I will post up a batrep shortly (still sorting out the Photobucket debacle) but wanted to share some thoughts on how this game went, given I have been staring at 40K in recent years through the store window, despite owning a bunch of stuff and having played it previously for a very long time. Others have done a way better job at pro/con'ing this edition, like my pal Joe, so I leave it to them for the long form. On the below, my view comes mostly as a Guard player wading into the new rules.

Story: The game was full of dramatic story-inducing moments that came from play outcomes. YES. I think that correlates to the Indexes and how they are all unique in appreciable ways and also, the simplified ruleset. Universal Special Rules of last edition are gone, and while I get that their algebra helped organize features and functions of units well across lots of different play, like competitive to casual, especially through a TO's eyes, it seemed dull and bookish to me. I play great games like Bushido, Imperial Assault, Strange Aeons, Robotech... these games have story in their play and feel unique as you navigate through your game and it helps if they not so cumbersome. I didn't feel that in previous 40k editions, it felt like an Advanced Philosophy class trip, lost and plodding through an endless swamp and debating the whole time about Jungian Star Wars themes. The current indexes and rules have what seem like a lot of fun options that breathe some anima into the people, place and things involved. Isn't that the point? Reading Dan Abnett to replay those conflicts? Give me the damn story and you can keep your the tourney complexity. More on the Index in a sec.

Army Building: Still cumbersome compared to other games. Was sorta hoping GW gets stats and costs on one page. Still perplexed why there is Battle Forged play and other mode, it isn't like they give you distinct Campaign and Skirmish modes like FFG's Imperial Assault, but a sit-down over a cup of tea gets it done. Costs were reportedly up this edition but my old 1500 point force came in about the same. What I noticed most coming back to the game was the wargear options are all gone from the index, so while I couldn't spend a last few points on Carapace armor or Master Crafted weapons, I was inherently avoiding the pitfall of previous editions: wargear splurges. All that aside as a positive, it did force me to drop heavy weapon options in squads if I wanted to squeeze in another Sentinal or what have you. Tough choices as usual but easier to get to the table and the Index has enough ability that comes with the basic costs, including commonly used squad-level gear like vox, standards, med kits, etc.

Index Staying Power: Remains to be seen but the counter-culture habits I live by are alive and singing Glee's cover of Born to Run when I consider that I could happily play out of the free ruleset along with Index Imperium 2 and Xenos Index 2, maybe forever. One of my best friends Pete at Not Snakes Gaming noted that 40k is no longer competitive and as I agree with that I also give thanks for it. I want games that feel right to characters and situation. As far as Astra Militarum, Chaos and Orks go, Indexes feel right to the character of the forces, situations and games I want. Codex releases may change things like complexity and dissonance with who you think your army is, but I am content playing these Indexes instead of a Codex, if I prefer one over the other in the end. Finally, a good value from GW with each book around US$25 and including what equals several codex to boot.

Terrain: Just weird, these terrain rules. The game now boils down to LOS and if you simply have it or not. Cover saves don't seem to be factoring unless you are talking Characters by themselves and I think that does speed up the game a bit. So terrain effects are dead? Yes! Wait, unless you use Fortification rules in Imperial Index 1, then it seems like a U turn in the face of easy. I love building terrain more than any other part of this hobby. I am a bit perturbed since I took pride in building terrain that reflects play. A few weeks ago Joe mentioned all of this terrain rule jazz to me and I joked it sounds like Privateer game's norm of flat mousepad terrain. Seeing GW releasing what equates to the same thing in their boxed forces makes sense now, given how terrain rules read. So be it. Building LOS blocking terrain can be fun too.

LOS: Sorta weird. Facing and fire arcs are gone (unless you are a Valkyrie pivoting to go Supersonic for some reason) and said Valkyrie was clipped by a Nurgle Vindicator who fired backwards at me without pivoting. Did not see that coming. Also, getting LOS on a pile of Plaguebearers by the Leman Russ tread was weird as well. Just gotta get used to that.

Movement Phase: Fine.

Psychic Phase: Interesting, must explore more.

Shooting Phase: Easier. Sorry, I guess seasoned players may balk and say what difference is there really but I will tell you it is way easier for me to learn and also to teach to my son, so that means something. Statlines are verbatim now, good when you have to keep your short term memory filled with other bits of episodic and particular rules, etc.

Melee Phase: Finally a melee phase where I feel like I have some game in the options, even if it means choosing the order my Valhallans are slaughtered, since after all, their job is to die to slow things down, not win hand-to-hand. Players alternate choosing which side of their side of melee fights is cool. Having a say means I have some initiative in how things die on both sides. I like that, especially as a guard player.

Morale Phase: Again, good. I was never a fan of all the modifiers some games pile on, especially over large forces and games. This seems fair and leaves me options to get more shooting in after falling back. Good.

Game Speed: Lots of debate on this point. I believe my experienced brethren when they say the 8th changes do not really speed things up but I do think the play is cleaner and not as prone to operational mistakes that can change the outcomes. THAT is something I like a lot and something I attribute with speed. A short game filled with re-sets and backtracking from complicated play feels slow to me.

So overall, not bad at all. I give it an A-/B+ for how the state of the game stands and what seems like GW listening to at least some of the customer base on what they want. Looking forward to getting some more GW to the paint bench and more 40k in the books (be that Index or Codex.)

Batrep soon! Bye!
I had a request from my buddy Joe over at my gaming club PAGE, asking to borrow a model to represent a VIP objective like a Political Officer, Planetary Governor or some such, for the upcoming Sword Sworn 40K narrative event on May 13th. This is from the same guy who runs 40K narrative events at NOVA, so, plan on a good time if you are in the Philly area:
Now that moment has come for the vaunted Swords of Dorn, as one of their recruitment worlds is besieged and all their allies are called to its aid!

I have a few models that would work for a VIP already, sitting around moldering in my Valhallan collection, but I thought a dive into the bitz box would be fun and a fast aside from Bushido.
Parts: The parts for this were a Solar Macharius body, slightly trimmed and cleaned, a right arm from the IG tank sprue (do they even make that anymore?) and a standard Astra Militarum left arm with a totally vintage 1980's Imperial Guard hand; almost all of these bitz are OLDER THAN MY 12 YEAR OLD SON. Weird.

After my club runs the Sword Sworn event and I get this guy back I will add a holstered bolt pistol to his right side, maybe counting him as a Senior Officer or even an Inquisitor.

The Build: I painted him up in matching colors for my Valhallans with base colors, what I call underpainting and then finished with my custom water-based stain for finishing. Check out the Valhallan tab to the left for more examples of painting with stain if that interest you, I have posts on that going back years.

Total time for this VIP was 2 hours from assembly to priming to paint and basing. Pretty dang fun. WIP pics:

Part 3 is found here. She's done for now. All-in-all this was a very fun kit. A few closing thoughts on the build: This is a high-quality kit, worth the price, even to the US from the UK. It is well-designed and sturdy, and sections lift off clean during play. With building, it pays to take your time with the kit and listen to yourself about how you want to modify it, if at all. That said, even unaltered it is beautiful. And imposing! This will dominate your average game of Bushido, with a 11"x11" footprint. Verticality will have to be a house rule in some cases, depending on the game system but for Bushido, well, we will have to have a batrep and see how it changes the game. Lastly, after the roof was together, I plan on running a bead of dark caulk underneath where each of the roof tiles meet, to strengthen it just a bit, and keep flex from warping or popping the tiles; just a suggestion.

I am really looking forward to some Bushido games with this... well done TTCombat!

Part 2 can be found here.

At this point, the Pagoda is very sturdy, mostly together and I admit that I wasted one night moving figures around on it making ninja noises in the basement. Pretty damn exciting for me. The wife probably died a little inside.

The instructions have the doors either glued open or closed. The doors themselves are 2 parts, a front detail layer of laser cut grey board and a backer to make it rigid. I wanted two things with these doors: 1. keep the detail to let light through and 2. Make them movable.

First I tackled the detail/light issue. That was fairly easy, I simply backed the painted detail layer pieces with parchment, glued with matte Mod Podge and left the original second backer off. Sorta flimsy but ok and beautiful with lights showing through.

Then I spent another night finding a way to make the doors move. I prefer a more forgiving design when it comes to making 6 sets of doors movable.

I finally settled on a design where the door hangs via a metal track on the wall, and a magnet attached to the door, allowing the doors to move around and also simply detach when gamer hands smack around inside the buildings.

My design was mostly because I could source all the parts from what I had laying around and reproduce it over 12 doors. The tracks were size 2 jeweler's saw blades, tooth-down, which happen to perfectly span the width of the walls, sorta like a lintel. I used Mineral Spirits to de-grease the blades and then used, you guessed it, matte Mod Podge to glue down the tracks.

I cut a length of the backer to lag over the top of the door and leave a space for a flexible magnet. Getting them all together only needed some trimming by eye to get the magnets on top of the door flush and square. Flexible magnet ribbon is best for this, about US$3.00 from the DIY. I just had to use Mineral Spirits to get the adhesive off for the super glue to adhere.

So that's it for the doors! The lights are simply flickering LED yellow lights from Amazon placed around the inside of the Pagoda, keep it simple.

Then I weathered the roof but you see it too much in the pics. It warms the grey sufficiently so it looks good next to the trees and such.

I then set about making some planters of flowers using wooden bobbins primed grey and weathered a bit after drybrushing greys to off-white, Woodland Scenics green sponge and flower flock.

So that is pretty much it for now. I plan on detailing the inside of the pagoda at some point, especially after I get a few games in with it.

This is a continuation of part one, found here.

Okay, where we last left off I had the unfinished pagoda separated parts out from sprues, cleaned and wiped with a cheese cloth (aka tack cloth.) This grabs all the soot from the laser cutter and sawdust from sanding parts, which keeps the painting clean.

I marked up the instructions with all my colors

For the record, these downloadable instructions are good overall, just a heads-up that the first floor awning assembly is tricky with the keys for the corners... make sure you dry fit them the right way, they go in a particular order.

Beware. Be read. Be ready.

I decided early on to paint these pieces as I went, thinking that the time taken to paint with rattle cans will save a bunch of grief in the long run. So, all prepped, I took several evenings to spray prime all parts with Rustoleum Grey sandable auto primer and then Army Painter spray colors.

Pro tip, if you are spray painting a bunch of stuff and the day is sunny but low humidity, you can put your painted parts in a dry cardboard box and it acts like an oven to speed up total curing. So, spray paint, once dry to touch, throw that stuff in a sunny box and let it do it's thang. Keeps grit off the dry-down too.

I kept the colors on this simple. 3 colors plus weathering at the end (excepting the roof, which was a grey I had laying around.) I used Army Painter colors Army Green, Leather Brown and Necrotic flesh spray with matching brush on paints (which are extremely close matches.) In the end, I used 1.5 cans of spray primer and 1 can of each color, more-or-less.

I used Mod Podge Matte finish to glue everything together, except for the base, which I used Gorilla Glue for extra bond strength. That beautiful base will bear a bit of weight so it is smart to used a stronger glue for that. All parts sprayed together, I proceeded to fit pieces together and glue. Note that with the tabs, it helps to round off the edges to make fitting easier.

Here is my painted Prefecture of Ryu set. I tried to make the colors more of the popping kind, such as you'd see in a military parade dress than something field worn. No better way to subjugate the populace than to disembark a large boat, burst into their villages quick step march with gleaming lacquer armor and fatigues which hide bleeding wounds, and remind them all who rules Jwar. Right now, they do.

Okay, laying it on thick. Truth is, the metallic blue really looks great in IRL and lends interest to the minis without a lot of effort. So that's the scheme I went with.

Up next, Kappa and Grey Pilgrim to get the Prefecture starter up to 50 rice, then more Ito to get that to 50 rice. After that? Some Savage Wave as long as my asshole friends leave me alone with all of this Shadow War jive :)

Related to friends who are not assholes, my buddy Joe has made a set of arc markers for all base sizes and I gotta say, it sure beats my old way of doing markers. I re-marked all of my Ito and this finished Prefecture set in about 40 minutes, which is pretty damn awesome. A set comes with all the sizes you are likely to need and handles straight and rounded bases. Just fix a model in there with a dollop of blu tac and you are off! Today I received my TTCombat Yu Pagoda. Herein will rest my ongoing thoughts as I raise this beast to the sky for the glory of Clan Ito in GCT's Bushido game. Or for me, to snort. I'll explain.

First Impressions

The pagoda came in a well-sealed flat pack for the flight over the pond to the USA. Looks like everything arrived intact with no breaks.

Instructions were not included so I deduced that they are online somewhere.

Damn this thing smells terrific. Seriously. Laser cut MDF smells like your clothes after camping and I didn't realize I needed it in my life. The off cuts go immediately into a cup so my paint area smells awesome.

One MDF off cut was used to test paint. I sprayed one side with Army Painter primer which the MDF drank right up. Later, I hit that side with some Krylon ultra-flat camouflage paint I had sitting around. Once dried, I coated with Army Painter Necrotic Flesh. Nope! MDF slaked it's thirst through the bottom coat. Closer but no cigar. Facing the inevitable, I ran to the store for some Rustoleum Grey sandable auto primer, same as I use on Forge World models. Sprayed on smooth, calmed to a nice coat and once dry I top coated with Army Painter necrotic flesh. Perfect!

As you can see, models fit on the floor sections well, for the most part. All Bushido models can fit on the wide ground floor level. On the second story only standard or small base models will fit. Given that this building may only see a bit of actual elevated play, I am not totally bummed about that. Seems reasonable that big models hate cardio and skip steps.

The details are good across the pieces so far.

Tomorrow I will start cleaning and laying out parts for glue. Stay tuned!
corpse throat.

2 Christmas’s ago I made two lit pagodas from aquarium
pieces that I gave as gifts to my friends. I learned a lot from that build and
made notes on things to do better next time, should there be a next time. Next
time was last month, where I finally made one for my own Bushido table. You can

What was different this time with this build, a Version 2
pagoda, if you will? Well, after working and playing on the original Version 1
pagodas I noticed a few things that I could change for Version 2:

1.
You could
add more playability The inside of the Version 1 pagodas
was not as playable as I would like for all models. A small based model would fit fine but
multiple models won’t and medium-to-large based models are right out,
especially in Bushido, since models can’t easily be placed inside the pagoda to
begin with, mostly due to the circular curves of the entrances. This raises the
point of having that weirdness where only one model can be placed. World-ending
feature? No way, but that piece all lit up screams for more models under the
light. Most miniature games run into this physicality stuff so players usually
keep blank bases handy for this and that would be fine but I figured I could
make it so that more than one model could be placed inside for the truly epic
looking last stand moments ala Avengers: Age of Ultron, minus the pouting
giga-heroes, weird Godzilla spouses-come-Miracle siblings and Robert California
Terminator. Cuts at the entrances were made with a Xacto Razer saw so columns
were straight and flush and that was all that was needed for multiple models
and various base sizes to fit. It did lose some of the cool style though. We are gamers, we can take trade-offs, sumus
qui sumus. With these cuts, assume the resin on these aquarium pieces are made
from unholy poison, so the dust is best kept outside of your lungs and
eyes: wear a respirator, cut and trim/clean pieces outside, and wash your face and hands afterwards.

Different
runs of product will vary greatly: The resin was really brittle this time. Wow,
I was really surprised that with the first two pieces from before that the resin was stronger, a
daunting realization when one cuts away a lot more resin in Version 2. It looks
to me that these pieces are blow molded in a way that allows for variation in
thickness between castings, which affects the strength. Not much you can do
after you buy it so keep it in mind when you shop. Thicker is better.

Line
of sight: gotta break it up more than before and with that, make it more sexy and scenic. A Version
2 pagoda was a chance to do more scenic stuff, namely, elevation and LOS blocking. Usually more
art means less playable space in a game the better looking scenery gets so I tried to
strike a balance; this is the most fun part to me, laying out raw, unfinished elements
of the build, like the wood chips for rocks and playing around with figures on
the mock ups to dial in stability and aesthetics. The Version 1 pagodas are
great for a lot of Bushido missions where you may put an objective like an idol
under the lamp in the center of the pagoda but the open space around the
pagoda, while very flat and playable (you can always add scatter scenery to it)
seems like a lost opportunity now. Since my Version 2 pagoda was supposed to be
in the heart of the rain forest I made it a bit more rugged and old, but
maintained looking. I used a new Gorilla Glue silicone adhesive to glue down
the pagoda, after new cuts and same finishing as Version 1, and boy did it work great. Long tool time, quick grab
and void-filling. It was forgiving to be able to lay out large masses of
adhesive, have it grab the wood nuggets and let me slide, shove and stack them
until they looked organic and best, playable for miniatures (given I had made a
dry run before hand.) The adhesive did not shrink or crack which is a plus as
well. After an overnight, the adhesive was dried and I finished with
finger-tooled caulk.

and finishing: Pretty straightforward, I used Army Painter spray and colors
to match this to the Plast Craft building I made before, using the same colors.
I did add a small spring and pond, using MIG mud on the bottom, silicone caulk
to hold some random plastic grass fronds I had in bits, and then Envirotex
resin for water. I made a mix of scenic tufts, flocking and scatter leaves
compliments the watercolor-like finish I applied to it.
Tea
lights: Version 1 pagodas have LED tealights, which look great in yellow.
For Version 2 I added a flicker LED light I got on Christmas clearance this
year and it looks much better than the always-on LED. The flicker adds a ton of
character and is mounted with magnet, just like version 1 pagodas. The only
modification I needed to make with the new tealights was to remove their casing
since the white plastic covering the light was really big and dimmed the light
through the white plastic case too much.

Ah, the dearth of tokens for this game is enough to drive
one crazy. Yes, the (free) rules supply a token sheet and they are decent enough to
get started, if not long-lasting, but a secret love in a gamer’s life is the
damned peripherals.

At very least, this game needs tokens very badly, where others you might skid by honestly without.

So, time to get crafty and make some tokens my self. These
sets I produced aren’t really all that ambitious at about an hour of staining
and dry-down overnight, then another evening of sitting to punch, sort and
glue the paper to the stained wood tokens.

The only real experimentation time involved in this was some playing
around with paper punch sizes and happening by my friend Todd who could color the PDF token sheet,
after which I sourced the rest of the materials.

I cut a good corner on the token production side by continuing to use
coins I already had as Ki tokens, which:

A. Looks and sounds badass when you use them.

C. Confuses Silvermoon Syndicate players who feel left out when they watch you using gold coins, as they bloody well should. Filthy animal keepers and carnies, the lot of them.

After reading more this week on releases and rules, I noticed the token sheet
I used is missing Bleed and Ki Block. I fixed Ki block by taking the token for
Ki and just drawing a slash across them, then gluing as normal. Bleed I will
probably just make some blank paper tokens and add a bloody fingerprint.

So, the method was simple. Stain the 1"wood tokens (sourced by Amazon.) I use water based stain so I could just use my hands. I dipped the token in stain, wiped off excess with paper towel.

I put the tokens on wax paper and let dry, flipping them after 30 minutes of dry time to allow both sides to air dry overnight.

After staining, I punched the tokens out by printing 2 sheets of the PDF at 100% and using a .75 inch punch. I then sorted them out in pairs. I wanted all tokens to be double-sided, so, two sides to Prone, Run and so forth, except for the Tired and Exhausted tokens, as well as the Fire and Poison counters.

So after punching, ahead of gluing, I sorted 1 tired and 1 exhausted together in 11 pairs. I then sorted Fire 1 with Poison 1, Fire 2 with Poison 2, etc. The logic here is shared by myself and my buddy Pete, where we like oneTired/Exhausted token for each model (just flip it as you go from Tired to Exhausted) and in making the Fire and Poison tokens together, it lends to cleaner play with less errors in how Poison tokens reduces down as models take hits, same for when Fire functions in a game.

Sorting ready, tokens dried, I used a fat round brush to coat the token with matte Mod Podge, added the paper token, smoothed and then topcoated right away with matte Mod Podge. Set aside, let dry. Once the first sides are all the way done you can go right back to the earliest ones you did in that sitting and repeat the gluing and top coating same as before, with the previously sorted paper token. The devil is in the sorting, so take your time.

This is a video review of my game group PAGE and the annual Winter Apocalypse game for 40K. The polar spaceport is my work... just realized I never posted any of that up so I will get on that soon. Also within is all of the crazy amounts of work in terms of figures painted, club terrain and awesome stuff guests brought. If you are in the PA area and want to join us for almost any game, something specific or something different, just reach out. We are active at most area stores including Redcap's and we will also be running some events at NOVA again this year, stay tuned!
See what I did there? No? Nevermind then. My group just played the Imperial Assault campaign over the last 3 months and it was a blast. That said, I was busy painting and pimping the game but not reporting much because spoilers. Recently I pulled out Bushido again and am slapping paint on them now to get Ito to 50 rice and I have a Savage Wave starter coming in from Ol' Blighty.

So, how about a bunch of pics of stuff I had built and painted from the campaign in no particular order?

So here is what's great about Imperial Assault from the hobby perspective. The figures have good sculpts and really benefit from some paint... they pop on the board in a really satisfying way. While you can adjust poses and bends with hot water, it doesn't really pay to clean up the models in a complete way that is slightly alarming to a seasoned mini painter; the material is just really hard to work with and trimming flash is like failing a sobriety test. That said, it leaves you in a cool place to challenge yourself to paint fast and try new things since there isn't much to be done about the material used.

With that in mind I have been letting the campaign dictate my painting schedule and so, as we progress through the campaign I usually tackle a few minis a week. For the side mission, "Sorry About the Mess" I needed Solo and an Elite Stormtrooper unit done up. So I simply put them on the table ahead of the impending game and knocked it out.

There is a ton of source material to paint from and that has been a ton of fun for me, instead of the usual fretting about designing color harmonies and sourcing or mixing colors. For the most part, I toned stock colors and built up highlights again.

I had about 2.5 hours to paint Solo and about another night to get the Elite Stormtroopers-Shocktroopers finished. In all, a ton of fun and they look the part on the board. The only real issue I had was the humidity was bonkers in Philly, so the Troopers and Solo got a bit frosted when primed.

Again, I threw caution to the wind and just got it done... pretty happy with the speed and outcome and I am knocking out a handful of figures every week. I have more Stormtroopers on the table along with Kayne Somos and I am mostly done the box set. I will be done the entire box set plus multiple expansions by mid September.
My game group played The Spice Job mission Saturday, so I painted Chewbacca up Friday in anticipation. Many people are saying that painted models win games, so it must be true as Chewie was a walking carpet of destruction in the game and seriously fun to paint.

Here is some more painted Imperial Assault I have been working on the last 2 weeks for our ongoing campaign which I am running with my cousins and my son. These sculpts are fun to paint and have decent detail but clean up could be a nightmare with flash if you are counting on making these showcase paint jobs. So, don't bother. Color adds so much to the game and a tabletop painting standard is more than enough to bring it to life. I added Litko clear bases too, which I really like on these models. I used a jeweler's saw to remove the figures from their bases. I'll close this post with a few other in-game shots.

Just a tabletop quality Gaarkhan here to continue with the box game painting... Diala, Gideon and Mak are on the table as well as some of the Imps themselves. I converted the ATST so we will see how that looks in the end, which should be soon. I'm using all of this as a warm up for some Khador I am stuck on.

I was asked if re-basing the figs on clear bases takes a lot of time. Answer: Nope, not really. The only funky fig I ran into with that was getting the feet of the ATST off the base but more on that later. Stay tuned, I should have a few updates this week of the work I have been up too, including some WIP diary from the 6'x8' Libertyhammer airbase board I built last month.

Editor's Notes: I took some liberty with some of the mission parameters of the Treasure Hunt scenario and game rules since this was a learning game for my 11 year old son Nate. I just encouraged him to play in character and do what seems cool and cinematic, which is how 11 year olds basically live life anyway.

For instance, I wanted him to be able to explore the whole board, so he needed to drive the truck around. Since there are no vehicles rules in Strange Aeons yet, I made my own:

Truck: Driving a truck doubles movement. If the truck enters or touches any terrain features, take a Dexterity test. Failed tests=immobilized. Up to 3 models may ride in the truck.

Row Boat: Normal movement in water.

Other modifications to the rules were all buildings are Hideous, which forces an Insanity check upon entering a door or window. I did not make fixed turns, only that he had to make 4 discoveries during the game, meaning Threshold needed to find four objects by searching any terrain feature (one discovery per feature) and then escaping off any board edge. Lurkers needed to kill all Threshold agents.

Nate elected to come on the main street into town, instead of the railroad or water (which was smart.) From that deployment I mentally found the 2'x3' boarder and set up my Lurkers in secret opposite his force. I wrote down the location of my Mad Scientist and Zombies and allowed them to be triggered to activation on turn 3 or when an Agent would have LOS to their location beforehand.

I also used the Treasure Hunt Treasure Table for the first few discoveries then switched to the Body Snatchers table so there was a chance he didn't find anything and it would create suspense (which it did!)

As it was, this was a great learning mode for Nate and created a thrilling story. Finally, note that Agent Dark Cloud is a Mad Scientist by cost and profile though in the story he is a Rogue Threshold Agent. This swap was purely for the narrative.
Engine running, the Threshold left the
van at the curb and entered the hostel, the last place a telephone call came
out of the town, turning up their first successful discovery, a bloody map with hasty notes jotted down upon them
near the operator switchboard. They searched adjacent buildings for a few turns
unimpeded as the sun set and moon shone pale above the wooded lake (and they passed
all Fear checks for the spookiness thanks to Agent Petri’s Command skill and

Upon hearing Morse’s shouts and panic fire, Agent DeVille
came out of the front door and charged the zombie which was attacking Morse,
immune to the terror of the dead thing (Insanity test passed), swinging his
lead-filled baseball bat at its head, twisting the old woman’s skull with a
sickening crack.
The zombie was knocked down but managed to lurch up and clamp
her septic mouth on DeVille's arm as he tried to finish her off. Falling to the
ground clutching his arm, he passed out (Major Injury.) Agent Morse passed his
Insanity test (using Petri's Resolve due to Command and Inspire skills) for seeing his comrade taken down and he continued to fight with the gory
zombie as the other one closed in. Agent Petri was inside the house, still
searching and did not have LOS and so, was spared the sight (and Insanity test
though he was likely to pass, also for being Alone in the dark house.)
Agent Morse was in a deadlock with the undead woman, yelling
for help when dread started taking its toll as the unbearable smell almost
overwhelmed him, his grip on his shotgun slipping from the bloody maw of the
zombie chewing the shotgun receiver held squarely by Morse in its mouth like a champ
bit. Morse looked sideways at the second zombie now moving next to them which
seemed to awaken from a fugue and surge towards the combat…
Suddenly Agent Petri bounded out of the house, shredding the

the fight with Morse, drawing a large meat cleaver from his belt as he
shouldered the rotting thing sideways. Together, Petri and Morse managed to put her
down, piece by piece. Agent Petri looked at the prone DeVille, then Morse and he
slowly shook his head as the Agent lay there, weakly rasping.
The rogue Threshold agent codenamed Dark Cloud stood atop
the slabs of the ruins, which glistened in the climbing moonlight with runic
spirals of coagulated blood. The agent impassively injected two of the zombies
next to him with a large veterinary syringe full of glowing reactant, one
shuddering and gaining some degree of vigor (Constitution and Movement boost) while
the other, nothing but a popping gasp out of its kinked, fetid throat (No
Effect.) With a gesture from Dark Cloud, the zombies walked right off the sheer
walls to crumple on the ground below with wet thuds (3" down) , only to somehow stand
up again and start lurching towards the agents (both zombies did not take Fall

Dark Cloud sent his last zombie over the side of the lighthouse but it hit the ground awkwardly and split its skull, ending its unholy motions. He then walked indifferently down the staircase towards the Threshold agents, who were now out of sight, busy searching the perplexing pile of crates discovered in a davenport next to the vacant hotel, a third discovery, a manifest (scroll.) Petri noted the Threshold sigil
on the sides of the crates but there was no time for a photograph and he lacked
dynamite. He did not see what they were but he had a sick feeling in
his gut about his hunch.
the end of the random move rate), the so Threshold ran out of the alley, through the back yard of
the davenport, searching madly and finding a fourth and final discovery, a Ring of Power on a rock next to neatly folded clothes

The zombie Charged, again coming within inches of catching them (less

himself, took a few precious seconds to dump his double aught round and chamber a slug round, compose his aim (forfeiting one Action
to use his Accurate skill for his second Action, shooting his shotgun with a
Dex boost of +1) and he hit the gibbering thing square in the chest, sending it splayed backwards (3” away , due to Power) and landed face down on the paving stones, a

The agents looked up to the main
street where their idling truck remained, and didn't see DeVille where they
left him... and the streets were teeming with undead. Dark Cloud stared at
the 2 remaining Agents as he advanced, a still island amid a roaring undead stream washing
towards them. Finding a scroll in the grass next to a town monument in the yard,
Petri grabbed Morse by the collar and they ducked into the dark
woods on foot, leaving DeVille and their truck to the now-occupied town of
death.

Only as the Rhododendron wipped past his cheeks as he sped
through the mossy, rocky undercanopy did Petri realize that this was a trap. One sprung by Agent Darkcloud himself. Petri pulled the panicking Agent Morse down a cut to the fire road and to eventual safety.
End Phase

Threshold won! Nate was extremely happy to have 2 scrolls, a map piece and a Ring of Power. Agent Petri gets a free Skill advancement (TBD) and Morse got one too, electing to take his Dexterity from 5 to 4; this makes the Accurate skill great for him, as aiming can make his powerful Mossberg hit on a 3+ for one Action or 4+ without aiming! At 6" or less, this is great for getting some breathing room.

Unfortunately, Agent DeVille perished at Sunset Lake... though that does not mean he is resting in peace...
Until the stars are right again!
This is a BONES model. Not bad at all for about US$2.00 and she painted up pretty well after I trimmed the flash off of her. I have to say, even when you have a lot of clean up to do on this soft plastic, you still make out. Great sculpt, interesting character and she will work well as a Threshold Spiritualist when I eventually have to re-arm my new Threshold team.
